United Nations
Security Council
(Double Delegation)
About
It is early 2021, and the UNSC must now address the escalating crisis in Myanmar. In a dramatic turn of events, a military coup has overthrown a fragile democratic government, plunging the nation into turmoil. In the weeks following the coup, security forces have launched a ruthless crackdown, detaining thousands of civilians—including key political figures—and curbing basic freedoms. Ethnic minorities, especially the Rohingya, face renewed persecution, with reports of state-sanctioned violence and widespread censorship further deepening the humanitarian crisis.
Internationally, the situation has polarized global powers. While Western democracies have imposed sanctions and called for accountability, regional allies like China and Russia have expressed support for the military regime, complicating the geopolitical landscape. Delegates must now deliberate on how to secure the release of detained leaders, restore democratic processes, and stem the tide of repression before further instability ripples through Southeast Asia and beyond.
Amid this volatile backdrop, critical questions arise: Can the UNSC forge a balanced resolution that holds the military accountable while paving a path for peaceful transition? And does Myanmar’s current turmoil signal a larger contest between authoritarianism and democracy in the modern era? With the world watching closely, the committee’s decisions could shape the future of Myanmar and set a precedent for international intervention in similar crises.
