Topic: Human Rights Obligations of Multinational Tech Corporations in Supply Chain Sourcing
About
Founded in 1946, the United National General Assembly Sixth Committee (Legal) was created as the primary body to deliberate on and address issues of international law and other legal matters that concern the United Nations. The work in this committee is especially relevant today due to the global tech boom—especially since the rise of Artificial Intelligence—and the intricate, multinational supply chains that lead to the development of new technologies. To this end, delegates will first be tasked with creating frameworks to incentivize multinational tech companies and valuable minerals suppliers to commit to human rights due diligence through their business practices and in each step of their supply chain processes. Frameworks should also focus on the mining of high-value minerals that are used in various technological applications, such as cobalt and copper, and are marred with reports of human rights violations in their sourcing. Secondly, delegates will also be expected to consider the position of the country they will represent while considering the voices of the countries in which these materials are being sourced. Delegates are expected to work collaboratively, diplomatically, and consider varying perspectives while attempting to address these issues, for the greater good of humanity.

In her free time, Riya enjoys reading, painting, traveling, and spending time with her friends and family (and her dog, Mocha!).
Riya is looking forward to welcome everyone to HMUN India 2025!
Selam Ambaw
Selam Ambaw is an off-cycle senior at Harvard studying Sociology, Linguistics, and Religion with an interest in how people and institutions create and negotiate meaning. In her third time staffing HMUN India, she is incredibly excited to be presiding over the LEGAL Committee with Riya. Now in her ninth (yes, this is crazy even to her) year of Model UN, Selam is honored to have HMUN India as her final conference experience. Besides MUN, she currently serves as Executive Director for the Massachusetts Small Claims Advisory Service, providing legal information to clients across the state, and conducts research for her senior thesis (which she loves to talk about so feel free to ask!). In her free time, Selam loves to read, draw, and find new food spots to try. And going on walks, on those few days Cambridge weather decides to cooperate.
